The English teacher Leonie Hemsworth (née van Os) and social-services counsellor Craig Hemsworth had Christopher “Chris” Hemsworth on August 11, 1983 in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. Actor brothers Liam and Luke Hemsworth. His immigrant maternal grandfather was Dutch, Irish, English, Scottish, and German. His married uncle Rod Ansell inspired Crocodile Dundee (1986) with his bushman skills.

Chris toured the nation as a teenager when his family relocated to the Northern Territory and then to Phillip Island south of Melbourne. After failing to audition for Robbie Hunter on Home and Away (1988) in 2004, he was recalled for Kim Hyde, which he played until 2007. Personal life

After meeting through their respective managers in early 2010, Hemsworth began dating Spanish model and actress Elsa Pataky.In December of 2010, they tied the knot. India Rose was born in May 2012, and the couple had twins Sasha and Tristan in March 2014. His family uprooted from Los Angeles and settled in Byron Bay, New South Wales, Australia in 2015.

Hemsworth has routinely taken his kids to national events where they compete in Brazilian jiu-jitsu, which they practise in with Thalison Soares.

In the 2021 Queen’s Birthday Honours, Hemsworth was named an Officer of the Order of Australia.

In the fifth episode of Hemsworth’s Limitless (2022) documentary for National Geographic, Hemsworth disclosed that his maternal grandpa has Alzheimer’s disease. In addition, it was found that Hemsworth has inherited two copies of the APOE4 gene, one from each parent, making him eight to ten times more likely to get Alzheimer’s disease than the average person.

Early work (2002–2010)

TV programs launched Hemsworth’s career. Hemsworth played King Arthur in two Guinevere Jones, one Neighbours, and one Marshall Law episodes in 2002. He appeared on The Saddle Club the next year. Hemsworth auditioned for Home and Away’s Robbie Hunter in 2004. He was recalled for Kim Hyde after declining the part. He participated in 171 episodes after joining the Sydney cast. The Home and Away star left July 3, 2007. After Home and Away, Hemsworth got more famous, although he later acknowledged his soap opera success did not help him get into movies.

Abbey Ross and Hemsworth participated in Dancing with the Stars Australia’s sixth season. The season premiered on 26 September 2006, and Hemsworth was eliminated on 7 November after six weeks. Marvel film producers thought Hemsworth’s features would turn off moviegoers, almost costing him Thor.

Thor and global stardom (2011)–2015

Sony Pictures said Hemsworth will feature in Shadow Runner in 2011, but production has yet to begin. The Marvel Cinematic Universe cast Hemsworth as Thor that year. Thor was his first franchise picture in 2011. He and Loki co-star Tom Hiddleston auditioned for the part, which Hemsworth says had him grow 20 pounds of muscle. Thor grossed US$449.3 million worldwide, ranking 15th in 2011. Hemsworth shot the horror thriller The Cabin in the Woods immediately after Star Trek, although it wasn’t released until 2012. His portrayal of Alpha male jock Curt Vaughan was praised by Mashable’s Alison Foreman as his “sexiest” performance. Hemsworth played the Huntsman opposite Kristen Stewart in Snow White and the Huntsman (2012). Henry Barnes of The Guardian praised Hemsworth for delivering the “superb script” with “some mastery.”Hemsworth reprised Thor in Thor: The Dark World (2013) later that year. The film grossed US$644.6 million worldwide, but Rotten Tomatoes scored it 66%, making it the lowest-ranked MCU film. Hemsworth and Viola Davis featured in Michael Mann’s 2015 action film Blackhat. The movie was a box office flop. Christy Lemire of the Chicago Sun-Times said, “Anyone who makes [their] way in the world sitting in front of a computer screen all day is not going to look as hunky as Hemsworth.” Hemsworth subsequently said, “I didn’t enjoy what I did in the film,” unhappy with his performance. It seemed flat and was an attempt to achieve what I believed people desired. But I’m not excellent there.” Avengers: Age of Ultron was his fourth Thor appearance. The film received excellent reviews and grossed over US$1.4 billion worldwide. Hemsworth won the People’s Choice Award for Favorite Action Movie Actor. Hemsworth returned to Home and Away in November 2014 as an extra, not Kim Hyde. He appears on the 19 May 2015 episode.

He co-starred alongside Ed Helms in Vacation, a reboot of the Chevy Chase film series, that year.MTV Movie Awards nominated him for Best Kiss with Leslie Mann. In his last 2015 film, Hemsworth played first mate Owen Chase in In the Heart of the Sea, based on Nathaniel Philbrick’s book. In an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, he revealed the cast ate 500–600 calories a day to reduce weight for the part of starving sailors. In the Heart of the Sea was a box office disaster, generating US$93 million against a US$100 million budget, although Hemsworth was nominated for Choice Movie Actor: Action at the 18th Teen Choice Awards.

Constant financial prosperity (in 2016 and beyond)

The Huntsman: Winter’s War, released in 2016, featured Hemsworth and Jessica Chastain in the roles of Eric the Huntsman and his love interest, respectively. IndieWire writer Oliver Lyttelton wrote, “they’re both struggling uphill against accents they’re palpably not comfortable with, displaying zero chemistry, and frankly appearing to be in different films.” Both Hemsworth and Chastain have been criticised for their lack of chemistry on screen. The film’s total revenue of US$165 million was significantly lower than its predecessor’s. Later, Hemsworth was cast as receptionist Kevin in the next Ghostbusters movie. However, Hemsworth was hailed by Metro’s Caroline Westbrook as “deliver[ing] the most fun” and went on to win the award for Favourite Movie Actor at the Kids’ Choice Awards, despite the film’s critical and commercial failure.

Thor: Ragnarok was released in the United States on November 3, 2017, and Hemsworth has since returned to the character of Thor in the third and fourth Avengers films, Avengers: Infinity War (2018) and Avengers: Endgame (2019). All three movies were well received by critics and audiences alike.According to RogerEbert.com critic Matt Zoller Seitz, “Hemsworth’s charisma holds [Thor: Ragnarok] together whenever it threatens to spin apart,” drawing comparisons between Hemsworth and Cary Grant.Hemsworth took up the trophy for Favorite Sci-Fi Movie Actor at the Teen Choice Awards. In 2019, Hemsworth also appeared in Men in Black: International, a spin-off of the original series. The picture earned $253 million throughout the world but was panned by critics for its “lacklustre action and forgettable plot,” despite acclaim for the chemistry between stars Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson.The following year, he reprised his role alongside the Russo brothers as producers and co-stars in the Netflix action thriller Extraction.In its first month on Netflix, the film surpassed Bird Box as the service’s most viewed original feature film with 90 million views. In 2020’s Thor: Love and Thunder, Hemsworth returned to the title character. Production in Australia began off in February 2021, and the film premiered on June 23, 2022.

The National Geographic documentary Limitless, on which Hemsworth has been working, is a six-part series. The program has cast Oscar-winning director Darren Aronofsky opposite Hemsworth. Hemsworth makes appearances on the show in many of the ways that people have tried to improve their health. Hemsworth participated in an indigenous Australian ritual, fasted for extended periods of time, and jumped into frigid Arctic water during the course of the episodes.The latter of these caused the most uproar, as some Indigenous organisations felt that having the show shoot at a holy spot was insensitive to their beliefs.

Future projects

Originally scheduled to return as George Kirk in the fourth instalment of the rebooted Star Trek film series, Hemsworth dropped out in August 2018 due to failed contract talks; Hemsworth subsequently said the screenplay was unimpressive.Hemsworth’s casting in the Mad Max: Fury Road prequel/sequel Furiosa was revealed on October 13, 2020. After making $20 million from Extraction, Hemsworth will reprise his role as Tyler Rake in the sequel. Hemsworth’s casting as a younger Optimus Prime in the upcoming prequel film Transformers One was confirmed on April 27, 2023. This is his first full-length animated picture.

Perception in the public eye

Hemsworth’s body became popular after he played Thor in the MCU series. The Times of India, Men’s Health, MensXP, Entertainment Tonight, and Metro are just some of the publications that have profiled his workout methods. Later, he developed Centre, a fitness app that gives users access to health and exercise plans in exchange for payment. People magazine voted him “Sexiest Man Alive” in 2014.

In May of 2020, Chris and his brother Liam were among the famous people who read an excerpt from Roald Dahl’s children’s fantasy novel James and the Giant Peach to raise money for Partners In Health, an organisation co-founded by Dahl’s daughter Ophelia to combat the spread of the coronavirus 19 in poor regions of the world.
